Hoopla! – a new app for books, movies and more

Hoopla is a digital streaming service that allows you to borrow and enjoy audiobooks, eBooks, comics and manga, movies and TV series, music albums, magazines and more! It launches on Monday September 2nd.

Titles are available instantly as there are no holds or waiting lists, and you can borrow up to 10 items per month.  These monthly borrows reset on the first day of the month.

You have –

  • 3 days to watch a movie or TV episode.
  • 7 days to listen to a music album.
  • 21 days to listen to an audiobook, or read any eBook or comic.

But wait there’s more!

Hoopla BingePasses give you unlimited access to entire collections of content with one borrow. Read magazines, watch documentaries, or access popular learning courses.  Once you have borrowed a Hoopla BingePass, you get unlimited access to the collection for 7 days.

Bonus Borrows  – available the last seven days of each calendar month, Bonus Borrows are titles available for you to enjoy without using your monthly hoopla borrows limit.

Kids Mode

Hoopla Kids Mode helps parents and their children discover kid-friendly content. All of the content – eBooks, audiobooks, comics and manga, music, movies, TV series – has been curated and brought together in this one family-friendly place. 

Turn on the Kids Mode by clicking on KIDS within Hoopla  (once you have an account)  to see content recommended for kids 12 years and younger.  

You can choose to create a 4 digit PIN to lock and unlock the Kids Mode.

You will need to provide an email and a password to Create a Hoopla account.

Register for a Hoopla account by visiting https://www.hoopladigital.co.nz/ or through the Hoopla app on the App Store or Google Play.

Choose Palmerston North City Library from the list  

Enter your library card number and PIN.

Enter your email and password to Complete Registration 

click Get Started!

Once you’ve created your account, you will only need to log in with your email and password.

To borrow a title, click on the title and then click the Borrow button. Your borrowed titles can be played right after borrowing, and found under the My Hoopla tab. Borrowed titles will be automatically returned when your lending period is over.

Hoopla syncs across all devices, so you can stream titles immediately or download for later.

Hoopla has something for everyone from best-selling novels, chart topping albums and blockbuster movies, all FREE with your library card.

Tonga Language Week

Mālō e lelei, it’s Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea faka-Tonga – Tonga Language Week!

The 2024 theme for Tonga Language Week is ‘E tu’uloa ‘a e lea faka-Tongá ‘o ka lea’aki ‘i ‘api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-‘a-kāingá – The Tongan Language will be sustainable when used at home, church and in the wider community. 

You can find a range of Tongan books, some national anthem cards and word search sheets on display at the Central Library this week.  If you missed one of our special screenings at Central Library or at one of the Community Libraries remember you can watch Red, White and Brass at home from the Library streaming platform Kanopy!

George Street Reef project

The George Street Reef community art project is a collaboration between Wooly Riot, PNCC, the City Library and the community. At Central Library on the First Floor (opposite the Main Desk) there’s a display highlighting the project.

You’ll find a pyramid with knitting and crochet books for both adults and children. There are also some great yarn craft magazines and a couple of relevant tutorials on Creativebug.

If you know of someone that might like to be involved in some way, please encourage them to get in touch at pncl@pncc.govt.nz.  People can craft from home or join in with others at the monthly Unwind session (Central) or the weekly Awapuni Craft Club

Cross Stitch

Grab your needle and thread and get involved with International Cross Stitch Day on Friday the 9th of August. This is a day of appreciation for this needlework craft. No matter what stage you are at, from complete beginner to cross stitch master, the City Library has resources available for you all year round!

Browse through online magazines devoted to cross stitching

Find craft videos including cross stitch on the free online resource Creativebug.

Visit the library and find the Arts and Craft living room for more cross-stitching books. You can also have a look through the craft magazines! 

Comics Plus is Here!

Want to read Comics? The City Library has a new digital resource called Comics Plus. Comics Plus offers unlimited instant access to thousands of comics, graphic novels, picture books and manga for kids, teens and adults through the Library website or the Comics Plus app.  All titles are available instantly with no holds, waitlists, or monthly borrowing limits and new titles are added to Comics Plus weekly.  All you need is your Library Card number and PIN.

There are three separate collections with their own logins – Children’s Library (for ages up to 11 years), Teen Library (for ages 12 to 17 years), and The Full Collection (all the collections including adult content for ages 18+). This ensures access to age-appropriate material.

Comics Plus Children’s Library

Titles include Minecraft, Sonic Hedgehog, Duckwing Duck, Geronimo Stilton, Big Nate and many more.

Comics Plus Teen Library

Includes the Children’s library collection, the Last of Us, Scott Pilgrim, Stranger Things and many others.

Comics Plus Full Collection

Includes everything from the children’s and teen collections, plus many other titles including the following series Walking Dead, The Witcher, The Boys, James Bond, Berserk.

Download the Comics Plus app from your App store to read  Comics Plus titles on your tablet or smartphone.

When logging into the app, search for Palmerston North City Library and choose which collection you wish to view – Children’s, Teen or Full. 

Enter your Library Card and PIN.
